Biking Patagonia - Lakes, Volcanoes & the Carretera Austral

This trip offers unending experiences discovering
the real Patagonia – natural and profound –the quality
of its people, a warm fire on a rainy day, and hospitality served
from a woodstove. A circuit to discover landscapes of unequalled
beauty, fjords, volcanoes, rivers of crystal clear waters, endless
native forests and diaphanous skies. A trip through the local
villages anchored to the sea, but intimately connected to the
forests and its trees, bathed in the sun’s light and adorned
by the snows of the majestic volcanoes.
This
is the south of Chile, a one-of-a-kind place on Earth, far from
traditional tourist routes. Its majestic setting, silent and startling,
is the type of simplicity and humility in accepting Nature as
it is presented.
We
travel through villages and rural routes flanked by forest and
crystal rivers. We will travel across lakes, horseback through
hidden valleys completely isolated only to return each afternoon
to the company of our warm fire, friends, the sound of rain beating
on the wooden roof and the inspirational words of Pablo Neruda:
“He who doesn’t know the Chilean forest, hasn’t
discovered this planet.”

Days 3 & 4 - Cochamo Valley
- Our day starts pedaling an incredibly beautiful route that takes
us on the Carretera Austral, or the deep south of Chile. Little-by-little,
we leave civilization to enter the villages with their brightly
colored wooden houses and chimneys always lit. This is the route
that will take us worlds away from rushing and its accompanying
worries to get closer to the fundamental and important. Our point
of arrival is in Cochamó, where a warm fire and Patagonian
lamb barbeque greets us. Pedaling: 30 miles.
Our
fourth day is an opportunity for rest or adventure, depending
on your interests. If you would like to relax, converse, read
a book that you’ve always wanted but never could, fish,
swim in crystal-clear water, walk without time constraints, then
we suggest you enjoy the day to yourself and dedicate this time
to you. Or if you would like to get to know the impressive beauty
of the forests, getting close the mountains so you can almost
touch them, or listen to the penetrating call of a hidden bird,
then you should enjoy the horseback ride for the day. Whichever
alternative you choose, it will be an unforgettable Patagonian
experience, healthy, deep and simply put, “more than you
can imagine.”
Pedaling: 0.

Day 5 Cochamo - Puelo Our
final day of adventure connects us most strongly to the awe-inspiring
landscapes of southern Chile. We will travel from Cochamó
to Puelo/Lake Tagua-Tagua where we will admire the mountains
and forests in the midst of silence and complete solace. The
River Puelo will be our adventure companion while the colors
of the sky, the clouds and the cliffs, our hosts. Our day ends
at a lodge in the middle of the forest where a superb going
away dinner awaits. Pedaling: 25 miles.
Day
6 - Puelo - Puerto Montt Return to civilization. We will
take the Carretera Austral south to cross the incredible Estuary
of Reloncaví. During this day, we will leave our bicycles
and slowly return to our daily routines as we continue to encircle
ourselves in the beauty of Chile. We can guarantee: never again
will you forget the warmth of the Patagonian fire, nor its people.
Never again will the rain be the same, nor the words “volcano,
forest, sea or cordiality” will be a vague concept or someone
else’s. The beauty of Chile is bewitching forever and one
will never shake it. If you should decide to return, we await
you here to welcome you back and accompany you on another journey,
through the nooks and meandering soul of Nature.
We
will say good-bye at the Puerto Montt Airport, but the warmth
and friendship of the unforgettable 6 days will stay with us all
eternally. |

Accomodations
Chilean Patagonia is rugged by nature with a nacent tourism
industry, thus guaranteeing the possibility of traveling to innumerable
pristine places with only a few visitors. For the design of our
route, we have chosen the most comfortable
acommodations available, however they remain rustic and fairly
simple--basic comforts that are in no case, sophisticated. But
we offer the highest quality services available to us within this
remote region.
General
Route Characteristics
The route is paved on a few sections with different types
of loose gravel on the others. There are frequent climbs and descents
with various pitches, which calls for being in good shape. Patagonia
weather is variable with mostly sunny days in the summer but we
probably will encounter rain, wind, and perhaps even hail. In
the summer months, the insects are out, but in no way are they
dangerous. In order to enjoy the trip, we recommend that you be
in good physical condition, and be prepared for the varying weather
conditions that will unfold as we travel. In any case, there will
always be a support vehicle following for the entire route should
there be any need to use it.
